I’d like to change gears and offer a personal account of my experience in Aroostook County, specifically the Aroostook National Wildlife Refuge.

As many people who know me realize, I am a huge nature buff so I consulted the internet service providers in my area to see what was out there. Imagine my surprise when I found out about the Aroostook National Wildlife Refuge. I soon found the place, nestled deep between the remains of Loring Air Force Base and the town of Limestone. With nothing else left to consider, I packed up my things and entered into the wilderness.

One of the first things I noticed was the abundance of waterfowl, especially the black duck. Highly-prized as a game bird, they are comparatively rare but I managed to see a pair of them swimming about as well as a wood duck and some Canadian geese.

Perhaps the most charming part of my journey came when I spied a group of river otters. Social by nature and adorable in appearance, I wasn’t sure what to expect; they are wild animals after all. However, they clearly perceived me as little to no threat and I was able to watch them for almost an hour as they played and socialized. One even swam over to my side of the bank to check me out.

I highly recommend the Aroostook National Wildlife Refuge to anyone seeking a real experience in the wild. I certainly won’t forget mine.

Aroostook County in Maine is known as the Crown of Maine, and after looking at some of the vast scenery it is no wonder why. There are many things to keep anyone pleasantly entertained and a good time can be had by all. While visiting Aroostook County, one of the key places to go to is St John’s Valley. From Bucksport you can see Fort Knox which is a granite structure that is open to tourists and has been there since 1844. The Alamo Theater is also located here since 1916.Confused? Here ‘s a little help . On site there is a film museum that shows films dating as far back as 1901. It is truly an experience not to miss.

Maine is also well known for its many lighthouses and outdoor activities. The weather ranges from the mid 70′s in summer time to below zero in the winter. Certainly offering the best of both worlds for outdoor adventurers. Ther is much wildlife to see, many hiking trails, and a plethora of scenic views including the lookout from Cadillac Mountain.

This is a county rich in history and tradition! Other places of interest are Bangor, Millinoket, Blue Hill, Bar Harbor, and Caribou. Caribou is the gateway to the Fish River chain, an 80 mile stretchs of rivers and lakes nationally recognized for it’s salmon and trout. Whatever you are wanting to experience you are more than likely to find it in Aroostook County, Maine.

My family has been couped up in the house for weeks and so we decided to drive to
Northern Aroostook County. St. John Valley, which is the more popular name of the whole
big area that has been a great outdoor vacation destination. We found out that the valley is
host and watershed to Van Buren, Allagash, Eagle Lake, Sinclair and other communities.

At first we wanted to do some water sports in Moosehead Lake at Greenville Maine to go
fishing, hunting, camping boating all at once but we changed our minds. We only had 3 days
and the kids wanted to go camping and I wanted to go shopping. So we distributed our
vacation days. We went to Southern Aroostook County to catch a glimpse of the falls, went
to Somerset County to shop and had a blast at Acadia National Park trying out its outdoor
recreational facilities. My kids even beat their dad to make fire at the camp. It was so much
fun letting lose in the wilderness sometimes.

We plan to go to the Moxie Festival and watch the Great Falls Balloon Festival next time we
can take a break. The kids would love to watch those floating hot-air balloons that they only
see on TV.

Though it is sparsely populated, Aroostook County is the largest county in the state of Maine, as well as the largest United States County east of the Mississippi River. The county is known for its potato crops and, because it borders Canada, its French culture.

Presque Isle is the largest city and the commercial center of all of Aroostook county with a population around 10,000. It is home to two different colleges, The University of Maine at Presque Isles and Northern Maine Community College, as well as three museums, The Northern Maine Museum of Science, the Presque Isle Air Museum, and the Presque Isle Historical Society & Museum.I was looking for more information and found it here. The Aroostook Centre Mall also draws in tons of shoppers.

Caribou is the second largest city in Aroostook County and has a population of around 8,000. Caribou has a large agricultural industry that includes peas, oats and hay, though its largest grown crops are potatoes and broccoli. In fact, over 60,000 acres of potatoes are planted by Caribou farmers each year, and Caribou helps to make Aroostook County the largest manufacturer of broccoli on the entire Wet Coast. Caribou is a great place to ski because of it many scenic ski trails.
